The Distribution of Clay Minerals and Their Impact on Diagenesis in Glen Torridon, Gale Crater, Mars

چکیده

Glen Torridon (GT) is a recessive-trough feature on the northwestern slope of “Mt. Sharp” in Gale crater, Mars with highest Fe-/Mg-phyllosilicates abundances detected by Curiosity rover to date. Understanding origin these clay minerals and their relationship diagenetic processes critical for reconstructing nature habitability past surface subsurface environments crater. We aim constrain distribution extent diagenesis using compositional morphological trends observed visible-to-near infrared reflectance spectra GT from Mastcam ChemCam, supported high-resolution images Hand Lens Imager. Spectral features consistent nontronite fine-grained red hematite are ubiquitous throughout lower GT, strongest where limited, suggesting that both were formed early, before burial. Diagenetic increase abundance diversity farther up-section, we observe morphologic evidence multiple episodes diagenesis, edge front partially preserved middle stratigraphic member, Knockfarril Hill. Near contact between overlying Greenheugh pediment capping unit, lack signatures instead coarse-grained gray hematite, likely through late-diagenetic alteration. hypothesize sandstone-dominant Stimson formation acted as conduit fluid flow into area clay-rich impermeable slowed those fluids, leading enhanced alteration surrounding portions including within nearby Vera Rubin ridge.

Diagenesis and clay mineral formation at Gale Crater, Mars

The Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity found host rocks of basaltic composition and alteration assemblages containing clay minerals at Yellowknife Bay, Gale Crater. On the basis of the observed host rock and alteration minerals, we present results of equilibrium thermochemical modeling of the Sheepbed mudstones of Yellowknife Bay in order to constrain the formation conditions of its second...

The origin and implications of clay minerals from Yellowknife Bay, Gale crater, Mars.

The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover Curiosity has documented a section of fluvio-lacustrine strata at Yellowknife Bay (YKB), an embayment on the floor of Gale crater, approximately 500 m east of the Bradbury landing site. X-ray diffraction (XRD) data and evolved gas analysis (EGA) data from the CheMin and SAM instruments show that two powdered mudstone samples (named John Klein and Cumberla...

Wind-blown sandstones cemented by sulfate and clay minerals in Gale Crater, Mars

Gale Crater contains Mount Sharp, a ~5km thick stratigraphic record of Mars’ early environmental history. The strata comprising Mount Sharp are believed to be sedimentary in origin, but the specific depositional environments recorded by the rocks remain speculative. We present orbital evidence for the occurrence of eolian sandstones within Gale Crater and the lower reaches of Mount Sharp, inclu...

Subaqueous shrinkage cracks in the Sheepbed mudstone: Implications for early fluid diagenesis, Gale crater, Mars

The Sheepbed mudstone, Yellowknife Bay formation, Gale crater, represents an ancient lakebed now exhumed and exposed on the Martian surface. The mudstone has four diagenetic textures, including a suite of early diagenetic nodules, hollow nodules, and raised ridges and later diagenetic light-toned veins that crosscut those features. In this study, we describe the distribution and characteristics...
